i2X Charts the Path to EEHRxF Implementation in Athens, Brussels and Beyond

The year's engagement moments — Athens Digital Health Week, the IHE Connectathons in Brussels and Vienna, and a string of smaller events around them — have given i2X something it could not have produced internally: a clear read on where the European ecosystem actually is on EEHRxF implementation.

What Athens told us

Athens Digital Health Week made one thing obvious: the appetite for interoperable systems is much higher than the supply of practical guidance. Clinicians, hospital IT teams and national authorities all want EHDS readiness to be a concrete checklist, not a regulatory ambition. That is exactly the gap the i2X demonstrators and SIGs are designed to close.

What Brussels and Vienna told us

The IHE Connectathons surfaced what most people in the room already suspected: the technical baseline is closer than it looks, but the semantic baseline is not. Systems exchange data; they do not yet agree on what that data means. This is the focus of the next testing cycle.

Where the ecosystem stands

• Vendors are mobilising — interest in conformance tooling has jumped
• Hospitals are asking for playbooks, not principles
• National authorities are looking for a single point of truth on EEHRxF interpretation
• EU-funded initiatives are converging — collaboration with Xt-EHR and xShare is now operational, not aspirational

What is next

Pisa, October 2026 — co-located with HospitalsOnFHIR — is the next major engagement moment. By then, the demonstrators will have moved another six months into operational life, and the testing programme will have a much harder evidence base behind it. The conversation in the corridors there will tell us how far we have actually come.
