From Alignment to Acceleration: How i2X and Xt-EHR Collaboration Supports the Next Phase of EHDS Implementation

Standards and implementation are two sides of the same coin. One without the other goes nowhere — a beautifully written specification that no one runs, or a perfectly working system built on a specification nobody else shares. The EHDS will only land if both move in step.

That is why the collaboration between i2X and the Xt-EHR Joint Action matters. It is the place where the implementation experience generated inside i2X meets the standardisation work that Xt-EHR is leading across the Member States.

Alignment is not about agreement on every detail. It is about making sure the right details surface in the right places, fast.

What the collaboration looks like in practice

• Joint working sessions between i2X demonstrator teams and Xt-EHR specification leads
• Shared review of FHIR profiles and Implementation Guides before they harden
• A feedback loop from real deployments back into the standards process
• Coordinated participation at IHE Connectathons and other testing fora

Why now

The EHDS implementing acts are entering the phase where decisions are concretised — value sets, terminology bindings, conformance expectations. Every one of those decisions has consequences for the systems vendors are about to build. Catching gaps and ambiguities now is orders of magnitude cheaper than catching them later.

i2X gives Xt-EHR a steady stream of evidence from real implementations. Xt-EHR gives i2X early sight of decisions that will shape what implementers are asked to deliver. Both directions reduce surprise downstream.

From alignment to acceleration

The aim is not collaboration for its own sake. It is to turn alignment into momentum — fewer rounds of rework, faster convergence on the technical baseline, and a shared understanding of where the hard problems actually are.

This is also a signal to the wider community: EU-funded interoperability work is not happening in silos. The pieces are designed to fit.
