From Projects to Practice: Why the i2X Special Interest Group (SIG) Matters for EHDS Implementation

Special Interest Groups are how the project moves from internal alignment to ecosystem-wide adoption.

Standards do not adopt themselves. The European Health Data Space will only succeed if the people who will live with it — clinicians, vendors, hospitals, regulators — are part of shaping it long before it lands on their desks.

That is what the i2X Special Interest Groups are for.

A SIG is where the project stops being a project and starts being an ecosystem.

Two SIGs, one common goal

i2X runs two open Special Interest Groups, each focused on a different community whose buy-in is essential to EHDS readiness:

  • SIG Industry — for EHR vendors, system integrators and digital health companies. The forum where industry aligns on the EEHRxF, surfaces implementation friction, and shapes the technical guidance that will affect the whole market.
  • SIG Healthcare Providers — for clinicians, hospital teams and care organisations. Where operational reality meets specification: what works at the bedside, what does not, and what acceptance actually looks like.

Both groups meet quarterly. Both are open well beyond the formal consortium. And both feed directly into the project's technical and policy workstreams.

Why this matters for EHDS implementation

The EHDS does not arrive as a finished product. It arrives as a regulation, a set of implementation acts, and a long list of technical decisions that have to be made country by country, vendor by vendor, hospital by hospital.

Without structured channels, those decisions get made in silos — and the cost shows up later, as incompatibility, duplicated work, and adoption resistance. The SIGs are the structured channel. They make sure the people who will be asked to implement the EEHRxF have a seat at the table while the work is still shapeable.

What you can expect from a SIG

  • Working sessions on real implementation challenges — not just status updates
  • Early visibility on findings from the i2X demonstration sites
  • Direct exchange with peers across 10+ Member States
  • A feedback loop into the technical guidance the project is producing

If your organisation has skin in the game on EEHRxF or EHDS adoption — whether you build, deploy, regulate or use the systems — joining the relevant SIG is the most direct way to be part of how this gets done.
